The Difference Between Levels Of College Basketball (D1,D2,NAIA)
What Separates Division 1 From Division 2? NAIA?
SIZE/ATHLETICISM & SKILL
• Division 1 basketball showcases a faster pace of play than other levels due to the athletic ability of most D1 athletes. Guards, as well as bigs, are typically bigger, stronger, and faster than players at lower levels.
• Specifically, guards usually stand between 6’1” to 6’5”, with a tendency for many to lean towards the taller end of this spectrum. Meanwhile, forwards and centers are generally taller, ranging from 6’7” to 6’8” and above, a notable prevalence of 7-footers can also be seen at higher-level programs within Division 1.
• While disparities in size and athleticism distinguish the Division 1 level from others, the perceived skill gap between divisions is not as wide as most commonly assume.
• Division 2 maintains comparable skill levels to Division 1, yet players tend to be slightly smaller, particularly in positions traditionally occupied by taller athletes. This difference in size is evident in the big positions, where D2 centers and forwards may average slightly shorter heights compared to their D1 counterparts.
• Despite the difference in size, D2 programs have demonstrated their ability to compete with and even defeat some D1 programs, emphasizing the importance for potential recruits to consider the similarities in skill levels between divisions.
PERSONAL D1 TO D2/D2 TO D1 EXAMPLES
• One compelling example involves a former teammate who transferred from a D2 program in Florida to the D1 program I was attending. This player excelled at the Division 2 level with an impressive scoring average and seamlessly transitioned to Division 1, making a remarkable debut with a double-double in his first D1 collegiate game. This specific instance highlights the aforementioned skill gap between D1s and other divisions, where the biggest separator is size and athleticism, not skill.
• Another notable story from personal experience involves a player who, despite his effectiveness in practice, struggled to break into the rotation at our Division 1 program. Upon transferring to a Division 2 school, he was able to flourish, becoming a D2 All-American and rewriting the record books at his new institution. This former teammate was also able to achieve professional success overseas, highlighting the importance of recognizing individual circumstances and pursuing opportunities that align with one’s abilities and aspirations.
• These examples emphasize the need for players to carefully consider their options and prioritize opportunities for development and success, as excelling in Division 2/3/NAIA can provide significant playing time and avenues for showcasing talent, ultimately leading to professional opportunities. Additionally, with the emergence of the transfer portal, players now have increased opportunities to transfer up to higher levels, further expanding their prospects for advancement and success.
NAIA
• The NAIA level often attracts former D1 players seeking more playing time or addressing eligibility issues, making it a hub for hidden talent and potential professional prospects.
• Contrary to popular belief that NAIA is one of the lowest levels of college basketball where teams can’t compete with higher levels, personal experiences and observations reveal that NAIA teams are capable of challenging and even defeating teams from higher divisions, showcasing the misconception surrounding NAIA basketball.
• I recall a specific instance where we underestimated a talented NAIA team, only to face fierce competition that nearly won the game. This entire ordeal and experience highlighted the competitive nature of NAIA basketball, serving as an eye-opener and challenging the notion that Division 1 is the only stage for high-level competition.
OUTLOOK
• As a player, it’s essential to consider opportunities at various levels, not solely fixating on Division 1. Exceptional programs exist across different divisions, offering valuable experiences and pathways to success.
• Remember, the key is to maximize opportunities and prove your talent wherever you play. Make the most of the platform available to showcase your skills and capabilities.
• Also, keep in mind that some lower division levels offer better facilities and fan support compared to certain Division 1 programs. Success and fulfillment can be found beyond the traditional Division 1 route, so explore all your options and choose the path that aligns best with your goals and aspirations.
